Why does my Avira Antivirus not perform any updates?

On rare occasions, it might be possible that Avira cannot perform automatic or manual updates anymore. This is caused by the RebootPending.txt file which remains permanently in the installation directory of Avira even after a reboot of the computer.

As a result, the computer expects after a reboot a further restart and blocks therefore the automatic and manual updates of the Antivirus program.

A manual deletion of the RebootPending.txt file permits subsequently the common automatic and manual update of the Avira product.

  1. Open the Avira console via the Avira icon in the taskbar.
  2. Go to Settings → General →Security and disable the option “Protect files and registry entries form manipulation”.

  3. Confirm the change by clicking Apply and OK.

  4. Delete the RebootPending.txt file from the following Avira Directory:

    Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\CONFIG\RebootPending.txt
    Windows 8/8.1: C:\ProgramData\Avira\Antivirus\CONFIG\RebootPending.txt
    Windows 10: C:\ProgramData\Avira\Antivirus\CONFIG\RebootPending.txt

In case the "Application Data" or "ProgramData" folder is not visible, you have to activate the option “display hidden files and folders” in the Windows Control Panel.

  5. Go back to Settings → General →Security and enable again the option “Protect files and registry entries form manipulation”.
  6. Confirm the change by clicking Apply and OK.
  7. Update your Antivirus product.
