Avira products certified for Linux

Avira AntiVir for MailGate and WebGate can be used on all IBM platforms under Linux

Tettnang, 29 September 2006 – “Ready for IBM Systems with Linux“ – this applies for the Avira security solutions with immediate effect. Big Blue confirms the compatibility of AntiVir MailGate and WebGate with this certification with all IBM platforms (IBM System x, i, p and z) under Linux. At the same time, we will integrate the products in the migration program IBM Systems Application Advantage™ for Linux (Chiphopper ™): the project was developed in cooperation with IBM and Novell and RedHat. IBM Innovation Center supports security producers to port their software on IBM hardware by using Linux as operating system. For businesses this means that Linux based solutions of Chiphopper can be rapidly and easily used on the IBM systems.

Less than 500 harmful programs infect Linux based computers out of 250,000 in total, although the amount of vulnerabilities is the same as under Windows. The explanation for this phenomenon is pretty straightforward: The open source code of Linux allows detecting and removing any problems that may arise in a fast way. However, this does not mean that Linux networks don’t need a virus protection. On the contrary, especially the systems, which are frequently used as mail server with the alternative operating system, do pose a huge threat. They transport malware to other nets without being necessarily infected themselves. In order to avoid that a harmful program can get on the target system at all, a protection – such as for example the security solutions IBM has certified for Avira – has to be implemented exactly in this interface.

AntiVir MailGate guarantees a safe email communication as it examines the complete incoming and outgoing SMTP data communication in real-time for viruses, spyware and other dangerous content. The software is supplemented by a professional Antispam filter as well as an outbreak detection. The main target harmful programs have, however, still are the Internet gateway. This is where AntiVir WebGate intervenes and thus avoids that malware can get into the system or is sent out by examining the data traffic.
“The certification of IBM gives proof, among others, of the quality of our products“, says Gernot Hacker, COO of Avira. “This award furthermore allows us to increase our brand awareness as well internationally, because Avira is listed as a solution provider in the IBM Partner World from now on”.
