Soccer.A takes active part in soccer

Avira warns against emails containing a soccer worm

Tettnang, 20 June 2006 – The whole world was happy about the peaceful way the World Cup games were running so far. Nevertheless, there are emails circulating since yesterday that refer to hooligans who are supposed to have killed several teenagers. According to the German security expert Avira, the headlines, which are supposed to be current, were cooked up in order to spread the new worm Soccer.A on a large scale.

The infected emails are written in English only. Furthermore, they can be recognized on the basis of the following characteristics:

Potential subjects:
  • Crazy soccer fans
  • Soccer fans killed five teens
  • Naked World Cup game set
Typical sender:
  • hotnews@cnn.com
  • todaynews@cnn.com
The content of the emails is as follows:

"Crazy soccer fans killed two teens, watch what they make on photos. Please report on this all who know." and "Soccer fans killed five teens, watch what they make on photos. Please report on this all who know."

The worm activates itself and downloads other malware on the PC as soon as an email recipient clicks on the photos that are supposed to be attached. Moreover, the harmful program monitors the computer and deactivates different processes such as security applications and system tools. The affected systems are Windows operating systems running on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 2003.

“We were pretty sure that there would be an attack during the World Cup. Therefore our virus lab was well prepared to meet the intruder, explains Gernot Hacker, security expert at Avira. “Events like this are perfect occasions for the virus programmers: the whole world is going crazy about soccer and all news are about the soccer games. This is why the emails referring to this particular event are spreading even faster.

The users of Avira AntiVir are completely protected against the worm Soccer.A. Moreover, the current version of the antivirus also contains the new heuristics AHeAD, which managed to detect the worm even without the corresponding signature. The free version of the software is available  at: www.free-av.com
