It often feels like we live in world where we are constantly being watched, tracked and monitored while online. But your online privacy doesn’t have to be just wishful thinking. There are tools available to limit what others can find out about our online activities. One way to remain anonymous and protect your privacy while using the internet is with a Virtual Private Network, or VPN. The below scenarios will help you understand why and when you should use a VPN.
1. Use a VPN while traveling for business
When traveling for business and taking your personal or work laptop and smartphones a VPN will help keep your business activities private. With a VPN, the information you send will be encrypted so you don’t have to worry about anyone accessing sensitive business information, like customer or financial data.
2. Use a VPN for online banking
Although banks do all they can to secure your online banking experience, it’s always nice to have extra protection. When you online bank with a VPN your activities will be completely anonymized so no one can snoop on your transactions and find out any identifiable information about you like your name or bank details.
3. Use a VPN for streaming
Sometimes content on the internet is geo-restricted, meaning you can only access it from certain geographical locations. One way to bypass these geo-blockers is with a VPN. Often a VPN provider will have a choice of countries you can connect from, giving you a local IP address so you can go ahead and enjoy the content you want to watch or read.
4. Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi
Whether you’re in your favorite coffee shop or out shopping, signing on to a public Wi-Fi is something you should think twice about. An open network can potentially leave an opening for hackers to access your data. Make sure no one can eavesdrop on your communications and use a VPN to connect to public Wi-Fi. This way you can go online privately and securely.
5. Use a VPN on your mobile devices
It’s not just your laptop or PC that needs to be protected. You have the right to have your data and online activities also kept private when using any mobile device like your smartphone or tablet. No matter what you are doing – from online shopping to messaging friends and family – no one else needs to know about it.
