Smile! Everyone is watching you.

Thanks to lax security – and some newly discovered botnets – there could be more people watching than you ever thought possible.

CCTV cameras do more than just watch. They are a prime example of the Internet of Things (IoT) at work, little devices that are connected to the Internet, doing their little tasks – and maybe a whole lot more.

Researchers at Incapsula uncovered the ‘whole lot more’ — a botnet of 900 CCTV cameras which were used to attack their client. Then it got interesting – the cameras were accessible via their default login credentials. And even more amazing – one of these cameras let them look at a mall storefront just a couple minutes away from their offices.

Whoops. They hopped in a car and went over to administer an on-site security lesson and clean up some malware.

Before people get their refrigerators, fitness bands, and thermostats into the IoT, they should consider the security of these devices. The prime security lesson: Always change the default passwords that come with your devices.

With an estimated 245 million CCTV devices at work – and who knows how many uncounted ones – more people are watching than you ever dreamed possible.  And this got us thinking at the Avira office – What are the best songs for describing this kind of situation.
