5 tips to make your Tumblr account more secure

What is the purpose of your Tumblr account? Do you use this account privately or it is for business use? In both cases, it is really important to ensure that no unwanted person has access to your account! By taking a few simple steps, you will be able to prevent others from sending spam or other “inappropriate messages” via your blog.

1. tip: Use a strong password for your Tumblr account!

Your password should be absolutely unique – and for Tumblr only. Reusing passwords for multiple sites is a huge security risk. Don’t use any common word or even your name or your birthday date for a password. This opens the floodgates to any hobby-hacker.

2. tip: Don’t give your login details to anyone!

We are sure that your best friends forever or family members are kind people. But there are limits. You should not confide your access details to your social media accounts to anyone else but yourself. Keep access to your Tumblr account for you and you only.

3. tip: Activate “Inform me about account activities via e-mail”!

The setting “Inform me about account activities via e-mail” can be found in your account settings on Tumblr. After activating this, you will receive a notification about any unusual activities on your account and therefore be able to react quickly if the account has been hacked.

4. tip: Activate the “Two-factor-authentication”!

“Two-factor-authentication” means that accessing your Tumblr account requires the password and one more step to log in – ensuring a higher security for your Tumblr account. To use the “Two-factor-authentication” you will require a mobile phone or the authentication app recommended by Tumblr: “Google Authenticator”. These apps are free to download on the app store and the Google Play store. After you have activated this option, you will require a mobile phone or the authentication app for the normal login. This one additional step required to login ensures a higher security for your Tumblr account.

5. tip: Control your active sessions on a regular base – in the browser and on mobile!

Scroll down in your account settings and click on “Active sessions“. Here you can find a list of browsers which had access to your Tumblr account in the last 30 days. In this list, you also will find the usage of mobile browsers but you will not find any access via the Tumblr app. To delete an active session, click the X at the end of each entry.

Bonus tip: It does happen – you have spam entries on your blog!

Sometimes you take precautions but still your blog is suddenly publishing spam or you’re sending malicious messages. This is time to double-check that you’re the only one with access to your account. For this, change your password. In addition, make sure you trust all active applications with access to your blog. If necessary, remove them in the settings.

To remove the unwanted spam articles on your blog, go to your dashboard. To delete these articles, click the gear icon and “Delete” in the article. If you need to delete a lot of articles at once, the “Mega-editor” of Tumblr might be able to help you. To reach the “Mega-editor” change “blogname” in the following link into the name of your blog: tumblr.com/mega-editor/blogname
