Lots of us spend time on Facebook every day. We surf through the news from our friends and their pages, we chat with friends, publish status updates, and we establish a personal profile. This profile is our public face, not only for friends and family, but also for colleagues, customers and maybe even a boss or two. This means it will be very unpleasant if a third person gains access to our Facebook account. Accordingly, we should ensure secure access to our Facebook account!
1. tip: Secure your password!
The same policy for Facebook should apply to each of your online accounts: Use your Facebook password just on Facebook!
Don’t share your password with anyone. Don’t even share your password with family members or your best friend. You’re the only one who should know your password!
Don’t use your name, your birthday date, or common words for your password. “123456” is not a good option, nor is “password”. A good password should be hard to guess and most important: It should never ever be on this list!
2. tip: Use the security features of Facebook!
In its help section, Facebook provides many security features for your account. Here you can find help with “one-time passwords”, login notifications, and much more.
An overview of all the security features on Facebook can be found here.
3. tip: Ensure the security of your e-mail accounts!
Insecurely accessing your e-mail account can enable a third person to hack your Facebook account. You need to make sure that your e-mail account also has a secure password, and maybe even two-factor authentication.
4. tip: Logout from your Facebook account if you’re sharing your computer with other users!
If you’re sharing your computer with other users, it’s essential to log out from your Facebook account. If you forget to log out from your account, you’re still able to log out remotely from another computer. Facebook provides some help articles on how to do this.
5. tip: Use an antivirus software on your computer!
If you surf, download software, or you click a hotlinks, there is the possibility that you might download a Trojan or a keylogger on your computer. That’s why it’s a good idea to use an anti-virus software which will warn you about unwanted applications.
Bonus tip: Think before you click a link or download a software!
Before you click a link or download software, make sure it comes from a source you trust.
