Beware fraudulent Steam extensions

Then listen up: Your inventory might be at danger – at least if you decide to install one of a couple of actually harmful “helpful” Chrome extensions for CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive). Security researcher Blaze warns Steam users of those fraudulent extensions in his blog post. They lure the unsuspecting user in by having catchy names like “theCSGODouble Theme Changer”, “CS:GO Double Withdraw Helper”, “Csgodouble AutoGambling Bot”, and “Improved CSGODouble”.

“Instead of being able to change your CS:GO Double theme, your items from your inventory are getting stolen; instead of trading with X or Y person you trust, the items go to the scammer rather than whoever you’re trading with”, he explains.

The good news is that all extensions came from the same source, a user which calls himself “Delta” and who already has quite a rep (and not a positive one!). By now they are removed from the Chome Web Store, so you should not be in any danger of downloading them by accident.

The bad news is that while one scammer is gone, there might be others just waiting for their chance to scam the unsuspecting Steam user out of their inventory items or even accounts. While this scam was relatively harmless others are not – so be extra careful when downloading and installing third party applications to improve your Steam experience and make sure to follow the account security recommendations.

In case you have reason to believe that you have installed one of those extensions make sure that you remove it from your device as quickly as possible. In order to do so simply remove it from Chrome as you would with any other extensions you no longer need.
