For the “home sweet homers”

They say that home is where the heart is, so help them feather their beloved nest with a smart home device. That’s right—homes aren’t dumb anymore.  Simply add one (or more) smart devices that can communicate with each other and the web, and you’ve catapulted grandpa’s semi into the future.

Smart doorbells: Is it the postman? Is it a raccoon? See who’s knocking on the door in real time and record them. These devices use WiFi to stream live video to a connected smart phone and come with a variety of features, including cloud video storage, motion detection and sirens. They also work together with other smart home security gadgets like…(read on)

Smart locks: Can a traditional lock and key use voice activation (in person or via a smart phone) to “unlock the front door”? Do they come with geo-fencing? (So, you set a perimeter around the home, and as soon as you leave it, the door automatically locks?) These little geniuses can. It’s a good thing Santa uses the chimney…

Smart vacuum cleaners: Does anyone really want a vacuum cleaner for Christmas? If you must—proceed with caution—and choose a cool robot cleaner that wanders about by itself. Remember the cat dressed as a shark?

A word of advice: When it comes to smart home gadgets, consider the recipient’s existing technology so that it all works seamlessly together.  Android fans will probably appreciate Google Home over Apple’s HomePod, for example.

For the “get-up-and-goers”

Jet-setting friends and family will love these.

Noise-cancelling headphones: Planes, trains, and automobiles… drown out the background noise and immerse yourself in your music collection. Most have Bluetooth connectivity so they’re conveniently wireless.

E-readers: Not for those with a paper fetish. These lightweight travel companions can pack a library of literature without a bulky book in sight! Wow.

Portable speakers: These are great to keep the entertainment going, whether you’re headed to the beach or on a camping trip. Bluetooth connection cuts the wires, and waterproof and shockproof designs mean they’re tough enough to go the distance.

For the “romantic-at-hearters”

Here more gifts to fall in love with.

Camera drones: Yes, flying drones can be romantic! Just imagine the selfies…provided they’re equipped with an HD camera.

Portable projectors: You’re at a party and someone *needs* to see your travel snaps? Whip out one of these babies to turn the world (or a blank wall) into your personal projector screen. They work with smartphones and tablets.

Fitbits: Track each other’s heartbeats, get smart phone alerts straight to your wrist (will it rain on your picnic?), and more, with robust devices that aren’t just fitness trackers anymore.

Security Reminder

Please remember! Every internet-connected device is a potential gateway for cyberthreats—and even “real” bad guys. Remember the criminal who famously gained access to a home by shouting “Alexa, open the door!”? Here are some top tips to keep data, devices, and privacy under virtual lock and key:

Be vigilant: Download only apps and files from trusted sources as they can contain malware.

Protect the smart home: Secure the home network and all connected devices against cyber attacks and spying attempts.

Strengthen passwords: Mum still storing them on bits of paper? Get her a password manager and keep all her online accounts super-safe.

Use VPN: Loved one travelling for Xmas? They need this! They can surf the web anonymously and securely by masking their IP address and encrypting their data. Airport WiFi has never been safer.

Or… you could remove all doubt and give everyone a pair of socks. Hand-knitted of course. Not even Alexa can do that.
