You might never forget it again though (or perhaps you will – I’m not going to judge you): Carphone Warehouse has been hacked and up to 2.4 Million customer data are at risk.
This Saturday the mobile retail company released “important data information” that suggested that the websites OneStopPhoneShop.com, e2save.com and Mobiles.co.uk as well as iD Mobile, TalkTalk Mobile, Talk Mobile, and certain customers of Carphone Warehouse itself were affected.
They state that “the IT systems of a division of Carphone Warehouse in the UK had been breached by a sophisticated cyber-attack. […] Our investigation has indicated that personal data which may include name, address, date of birth and bank details of up to 2.4 million customers may have been accessed. Encrypted credit card data of up to 90,000 customers may also have been accessed.”
And while 2.4 Million affected customers might sound like a lot and it for sure doesn’t come as a condolence for the people whose data got stolen, Carphone Warehouse said that the “vast majority” of their users were not affected: Their information, together with the ones from Currys or PCWorld, are hosted on separate systems.
Affected customers should already have been informed by mail.
