Unable to perform update due to the file RebootPending.txt remaining on the computer

On rare occasions, it might not be possible to perform automatic updates anymore. This is caused by the file RebootPending.txt remaining in the installation directories of Avira, even after a reboot of the computer.
As a consequence, the computer still thinks that a reboot is required and automatic or manual update attempts are blocked.

Solution:

Proceed as follows to manually delete the file RebootPending.txt:

  1. First, deactivate the "Product Protection". Start the Avira control center by clicking on the umbrella icon on the taskbar or on the desktop

  2. Press the F8-key or select "Extras" and then "Configuration", to open the configuration menu

  3. Select the category "General" and then "Security"

    Below "Product protection", remove the check mark next to "Protect files and registry entries from manipulation"

  4. Click on Apply on the bottom right and close the window with OK

Now, you can remove the file RebootPending from your hard drive at these locations (depending on your operating system):

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\CONFIG\RebootPending.txt

Windows Vista/7/8: C:\ProgramData\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\CONFIG\RebootPending.txt

In case you do not see the folders Application Data or Program Data, you need to activate the display of hidden files and folders within the folder options of Windows (control panel). Please proceed as follows:


Windows XP:

  1. Click on Start → Settings → Control Panel → Folder Options and select the tab "View"
  2. At "Hidden files and folders, activate the item "Show all files and folders" and click on OK

Windows Vista:

  1. Click on Start → Control Panel
  2. On the top left switch to "Classical View"
  3. Click on "Folder Options" and select the tab "View"
  4. At the item "Hidden files and folders", make sure that the radio button next to "Show hidden files, folders, or drives" is activated and confirm the selection with OK

Windows 7:

  1. Click on Start → Control Panel
  2. On the top right, next to "View by", switch to "Small icons"

  3. Click on "Folder Options" and select the tab "View"

  4. At the item "Hidden files and folders", make sure that the radio button next to "Show hidden files, folders, or drives" is activated and confirm the selection with OK

Windows 8:

  1. Switch to the Metro-view (or tile view) of Windows 8 e.g. by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard
  2. Click with the right mouse button on an empty area
  3. Click on "All apps" on the bottom right


     
  4. Click on "Control Panel"
  5. On the top right, next to "View by", switch to "Small icons"
  6. Click on "Folder Options" and select the tab "View"

  7. At the item "Hidden files and folders", make sure that the radio button next to "Show hidden files, folders, or drives" is activated and confirm the selection with OK


Reactivate the "Product Protection"

  1. Start the Avira control center by clicking on the umbrella icon on the taskbar or on the desktop
  2. Press the F8-key or select "Extras" and then "Configuration", to open the configuration menu
  3. Select the category "General" and then "Security"
    Below "Product protection", activate the check mark next to "Protect files and registry entries from manipulation"

  4. Click on Apply on the bottom right and close the window with OK
