Trojan undercuts networks
Tue, 09 December 2008
The anti-virus experts at Avira have discovered a dangerous Trojan that works in a network as a server to assign addresses to computers and redirects online banking requests to phishing sites
Tettnang, 9 December 2008 – Avira warns against a Trojan that pretends to be a DHCP server for the network of an infected computer.
The harmful program tries to issue fake server addresses to convert website names in to Internet addresses. For instance, if the attack is successful the victims can end up on a phishing site instead of their bank. The Trojan of the DNSChanger family is especially treacherous, as it only needs to attack one computer in the network in order to fake DNS addresses on all computers in the network segment.
The Trojan installs a network driver on the infected computer and attempts to intercept DHCP requests via ARP spoofing from the network data stream; it then redirects them and replies to them with fake DNS server addresses.
Avira users are already protected against this threat. The IT security solutions from Tettnang recognize it generically as TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen.
