Tettnang, 22 July 2008 – Storm Worm has a new trick focussed on American internet users.
The websites which feed the malware point to the planned introduction of a common North American currency for Canada, USA and Mexico with the name "Amero":
The storm worm website states "The US government began to realize the plan to replace the Dollar with the "Amero", the new currency of the North American Currency Union. Canada, the United States of America and Mexico have resolved to unite in order to resist the worldwide financial crisis. You can become acquainted with the plan of the implementation of Amero, just click on the icon under this text."
Compared to previous versions, the latest "Storm Worm" does not contain any new malware. However the current version tries to attach itself using root-kit techniques and hides from the user.
Avira users are protected, the anti-virus software from the IT protection experts recognises the malware as Worm/Zhelatin.ZI using the virus definition file 7.00.05.148. Even before publication of the virus definition file, Avira's protection solutions were able to detect and block the malware with generic recognition methods such as HEUR/Crypted.
Further details concerning the malware can be obtained from Avira's information pages about viruses.
