Avira's virus protection closes backdoors for PDF Trojans
Tettnang, 6 May 2008 - In February Avira warned against malicious Java scripts which infiltrate systems embedded in PDF files and smuggle in malicious code. This malicious code has since spread rapidly, even though the malware writers are only carrying out specific attacks and not aiming at the masses.
'Hackers are increasingly exploiting the PDF security flaw for Trojan attacks', explains Tjark Auerbach, the founder and CEO of Avira. 'Over the last few months, the number of specific attacks via PDF files has significantly increased, but the culprits with their control servers and backdoor families remain the same.' The infected files contain a Trojan installer and a blank PDF page. As soon as this page is opened, the Trojan installs itself on the system and opens the door for the cyber-criminals.
'Users of a patched Acrobat Reader version can recognise a PDF exploit by the error message displayed when a file is loaded', warns Auerbach. 'In the event of an infection, users without an up-to-date security patch from Acrobat will notice that the Acrobat Reader closes but opens again immediately and displays the required document.'
The virus scanner from Avira is able to identify the dangerous malware and put it out of action. 'PDF files are particularly attractive for hackers as a means of smuggling malware because many users do not think it is necessary to update their Acrobat version', says Auerbach. 'The users of Avira AntiVir can count on the reliable protection against these and other cyber-attacks - but should always carry out regular program updates.'
