Mobile defense: Avira protects pocket PCs and smartphones against viruses

Software Avira AntiVir Mobile supports popular models and prevents downtimes and data loss
Tettnang, 5 July 2007 – The German IT security provider Avira is reinforcing its shield for mobile devices. The revised version of Avira AntiVir Mobile now fends off security attacks on pocket PCs running on Windows Mobile and smartphones on Symbian even more reliably. Among other things, this is ensured by a new type of real-time scan, which continually monitors all file movements on a device and immediately reports attempts at infection. Also new for pocket PCs is a scan run which automatically starts when an SD card is inserted. Avira AntiVir Mobile is suitable for both company and private use. The annual license is now available through the Avira Online Shop or as a box version at SAD for EUR 24.99.
Avira AntiVir Mobile is quick and easy to install on mobile devices and is available now. Like a shield, the program now automatically activates itself after a restart of the pocket PC. Files which are classified as dangerous can be immediately deleted very easily. Updates can also be carried out within a few seconds. Thanks to the AntiVir Malware Detection Engine specially developed by Avira for mobile devices, the software only requires 150 to 220 KB working memory and is therefore one of the smallest and most powerful scan engines on the market. On Symbian the user can even individually adapt the heuristic scanner to the levels low, medium and high. Depending on the selection, the device works with maximum performance or at the highest security level.
“PDAs, smartphones and cellphones are increasingly developing into multi-functional devices. It has long been possible to store documents on them, manage appointments, correspond by email or surf the Internet. It is this versatility and the increasing integration in corporate communication make them a worthwhile target for viruses and other malware”, explains Tjark Auerbach, the founder and CEO of Avira.
The danger comes from two directions. On the one hand, users themselves infect their cellphone with dangerous viruses when carrying out installations. The malware can then overwrite important system files from the internal Flash memory, rendering the device unusable. On the other hand, hackers are targeting the communication channels of pocket PCs and smartphones. For example, malware such as dialers is disguised as an allegedly cost-saving WAP surf tool and connects to expensive SMS senders. Another example scenario is the infection of Windows networks via infected MMC memory cards.
With the current release, Avira has also simplified operation of the software. All important functions such as starting and configuring the program, activating the real-time protection and implementation of updates are carried out by clicking with the mouse on the familiar Avira screen icon in the toolbar.
Avira AntiVir Mobile supports the most popular pocket PCs and smartphones. The annual license contains all updates, upgrades and 2 weeks installation support. System requirements and further information are available at: http://www.avira.com/en/products/avira_antivir_mobile.html
