Migration or update scenarios
Migration for individual workstations or multi-user workstations for up to 20 clients, which are not administered centrally
As soon as version 9 is released you will see a slide-up notification. You will have the opportunity to start migration directly from the slide-up. The program will uninstall, reboot and then install the new version. Your existing license will be integrated in version 9. While installing the new version, you can decide if you want to keep your current configuration. If you decide to keep the
configuration settings they are adjusted to the requirements of version 9.
Migration for centrally administered multi-user installations or installations with more than 20 clients
Avira AntiVir Professional, which is also affected by the migration, can be administered centrally. You can use the administration functions and programs that are available for migration.
Migration through the Avira Security Management Center
The Avira Security Management Center, which can be used to administer Avira AntiVir Professional from a central point, is the easiest way to migrate. It is required that the SMC and the SMC agents which are installed on the administered computers are upgraded to version 2.4 first. Version 2.4 will be available with the Q1-2009 release.
Migration of the Professional product can be performed by uninstalling version 8 and the installation/configuration of version 9. With SMC version 2.4 it is possible to operate Avira AntiVir Professional 8 and 9 simultaneously.
Migration via Silent Setup
Migration to version 9 can be done from a central position even if you don’t administer a multi-user installation of Avira AntiVir Professional through the Avira SMC. Use “Silent Setup” for this.
The setup.inf file is required for silent setup and is included in the program directory. This file has to include an extra section to control the upgrade for the migration:
- Upgrade (0=No, 1=Yes)
- ReUseConfig (0=No, 1=Yes)
There will be no upgrade if these parameters are not set (error message AV8 installation), but “only” a new installation.
If the configuration should be kept as well then it is important that the setup.inf contains an entry with the path to the configuration file “avwin.ini”. It is required that the
configuration settings are adjusted first in the “avwin.ini” to the requirements of version 9.
You can find an example setep.inf in the Avira program directory and please see the manual for details on the usage and possible parameters.
Update process through the Avira Internet Update Manager
If you receive updates through the Avira Internet Update Manager, please make sure you update the Avira Internet Update Manager to the latest version and to add the product "Avira AntiVir Professional Version 9" before migrating any workstations.
Migration of Avira AntiVir Server (Windows)
Avira AntiVir Server Windows informs you as soon as version 9 is available.
This happens either through a notification email and/or information
in the status TAB of the GUI.
It is important that you
don’t perform the migration to version 9 of the server through the programs internal product update option. You must download version 9 from the Avira website and then select setup.
The following general conditions apply for the migration:
- Migration to version 9 (and also the reinstallation of version 9) is only possible on systems that meet the system requirements and that support filter drivers which have been developed according to the Microsoft Filter Manager model (so called mini filters). Installation on systems that don’t support mini filters is not possible.
- It is only possible to keep the configuration when migrating if you have version 7 or higher on your computer. If your version is older that 7, you have to uninstall this version and install version 9 afterwards.
- If Avira AntiVir Server (Windows) is administered through the Avira SMC from a central position, migration can only be performed through the SMC.
- If migration to version 9 is performed with Avira SMC, it is necessary to update the SMC and the installed SMC agents on the servers to version 2.4 before. Version 2.4 of the SMC is the only one that can administer server version 9. With SMC version 2.4 it is possible to operate the server version 8 and 9 simultaneously. SMC version 2.4 will be released with the new server version 9. Migration with the SMC is performed by uninstalling the prior versions centrally and then installing the new version 9.
- If migration is performed by installing the new version on top of an existing installation, it is possible to take over the configuration of the prior version.
- Files that are no longer required for version 9, are deleted.
- Migration can possibly require a re-start of the Avira AntiVir Server.
