Frequently asked questions
When do I have to change my version 1.x resp. 2.x?
You don't need to change version 1.x resp. 2.x immediately as soon as version 3.0 appears. Avira offers a migration time of period untill 31 October 2009. Within this time-frame you can change over to version 3.0.
Can I carry out the migration with the help of the SMC?
The Avira Security Management Center (SMC) completely supports version 3.0 of Avira AntiVir MailGate and WebGate. You can uninstall version 1.x resp. 2.x with the SMC (with supplied uninstallation script) and you can also install, configure and control version 3.0.
What migration support does Avira offer?
Avira offers the following information and tools to make sure that the migration can be done quickly and without any problems.
1. A Deinstallation script to remove version 1.x resp. 2.x: Please note that this script assumes the present installation is a default installation. If the installation is a user-defined installation, e.g. if files have been renamed or have been installed into different directories, these files will not be found.
2. A description of configuration settings and a script to migrate the configuration settings:
In the product package of version 3.0 Avira provides detailed information which configuration settings and options have changed and how they have to be adapted. The product packages will also contain a script that customers can use to migrate the configuration settings.
How long for will Avira support version 1.x resp. 2.x?
Avira will go on supporting version 1.x resp. 2.x of Avira AntiVir MailGate/MailGate Suite and WebGate/WebGate Suite until October 31, 2009. This means Avira will provide Engine and VDF updates for version 2.x during this migration period.
However, it will not be possible to provide feature enhancements for the previous versions during this period. If needed limited bugfixes will be provided for any malfunction that seriously endangers the usability of the product.

Can I operate version 3.0 parallel to version 1.x resp. 2.x?
Unfortunately it is not possible to run version 1.x resp. 2.x and version 3.0 in parallel because this might cause functional problems
How can I uninstall version 1.x resp. 2.x?
The Avira Unix products, version 1.x resp. 2.x do not offer a deinstallation routine. Therefore Avira will provide a deinstallation script for customers that can be used to remove the 1.x resp. 2.x version. This Deinstallation script will be part of the version 3.0 product package.
Please note that this script assumes that the present installation is a default installation. If the installation is a user-defined installation, e.g. if files have been renamed or have been installed into different directories, these files will not be found.
What shall I do with the configuration settings of version 1.x resp. 2.x?
Although the majority of the configuration settings have not been changed there a some settings that are completely different in version 3.0. Therefore it is necessary to transfer the configuration settings of version1.x resp. 2.x, i.e. to adapt them to the requirements of version 3.0.
In the product package of version 3.0 Avira provides detailed information which configuration settings and options have changed and how they have to be adapted. The product packages will also contain a script that customers can use to migrate the configuration settings.
