Migration is almost automatic, which means the program itself performs the entire process of uninstalling the prior version and installing version 9.
The valid license and most of the configuration is taken over automatically to version 9. For multi-user environments, which are centrally managed, you have to carry out the migration via silent setup or via Avira SMC.
Migration for a single-user or for up to 100 users, without using Avira SMC
A slide-up will inform you as soon as version 9 is available. You have the possibility to start migration to version 9 directly from the slide-up, if you use Avira AntiVir Premium, Avira Premium Security Suite or Avira AntiVir Professional.
The program uninstalls the old version, it reboots the computer and installs the new version automatically. You can choose to keep the old configuration or not, during installation.
You can find more information in our FAQ article AV9: How is the migration done for Premium, Premium Security Suite and Professional with less than 100 clients?.
Migration process through the Avira Security Management Center
You can centrally upgrade Avira AntiVir Professional v.8 to v.9, via Avira SMC. It is however required to upgrade first Avira SMC and the SMC Agents, which are installed in the Security Environment, to version 2.4. SMC Version 2.4 will also be available in the Q1-2009 release.
Migration of Avira AntiVir Professional is achieved by uninstalling the prior version, then installing and configuring version 9. A new start of the client computer is required after uninstall.
This mechanism allows you to keep both versions of AntiVir (8 and 9) on your network, at the same time, so that you can upgrade one group at a time.
You can find more details in our FAQ article SMC: How is the migration of Professional products done via SMC? or on our Migration Portal.
Avira AntiVir Professional migration through silent setup
If you are not using Avira SMC, you can still carry out a multi-user migration for Avira AntiVir Professional, through a silent setup.
A silent setup migration is performed with the setup.inf file. This file has to include an extra section to monitor the upgrade with the following values:
- Upgrade (0=No, 1=Yes)
- ReUseConfig (0=No, 1=Yes)
If these values are not present (error message with existing AV8 installation), it only performs a re-install, instead of upgrade.
The setup.inf needs to include an entry with the path to the configuration file avwin.ini, if the configuration should be kept.
You can find an example of the setup.inf file in AntiVir's program directory. Please consult the manual for details about the use and possible parameters.
Avira AntiVir Server (Windows) migration
Avira AntiVir Server (Windows) notifies you, as soon as version 9 is available, via email and/ or via the GUI status tab.
Please note, that you cannot upgrade to version 9 using the product update feature. First, you have to download version 9 from Avira Website and then run the setup.
