Should I deactivate Windows Defender, if I use Avira Antivirus?

We recommend to deactivate the Windows Defender only if one of the Avira Antivirus modules remain inactive after the product installation. Verify in your Windows System Eventlog, if the Windows Defender is blocking any Avira modules.

Open Windows System Eventlog

  • Windows XP
    Start → Run → type Eventvwr → select System and look for WindDefend in the "Source" column

  • Windows 7
    Start →, type Eventvwr in "Program and File Search", select Windows logs → System and look for Windows Defend in the "Source" column

  • Windows 8
    Press Widows key+W → type in the Search box ev select Windows logs → System and look for Windows Defend in the "Source" column

  • Windows 8.1
    Right click on Start button → Event Viewer select Windows Logs → System and look for Windows Defend in the "Source" column

  • Windows 10
    Type event in the taskbar search box and choose View eventlogs in the result. Select Windows Logs → System and look for Windows Defend in the "Source" column

If the "Eventlog" is displaying a similar message, you have to deactivate the Windows Defender:

Windows Defender Real-Time Protection agent has detected changes. Microsoft recommends you analyze the software that made these changes for potential risks. You can use information about how these programs operate to choose whether to allow them to run or remove them from your computer. Allow changes only if you trust the program or the software publisher. Windows Defender can't undo changes that you allow.

Deactivate Windows Defender

Avira provides the following scripts to deactivate (or reactivate later on) the Windows Defender. Download and save the script on your device. Unpack the archive (Password: avira) and double-click the VBS script.

  • DisableWDefender_en.zip
  • EnableWDefender_en.zip


  • Verify the Avira Antivirus status

    In case the “Avira Control Center” displays an inactive module, you have to perform a change installation of your Avira Antivirus product.

    Therefore, go to Start → Settings → Control Panel → Add or Remove Programs, click on Avira Antivirus, and then click Change. Once the Avira wizard opens, select Modify. When the change installation is complete, restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
