What does the AMES message mean "Your host (IP address) is blacklisted"?
What is a blacklist?
A blacklist includes IP addresses which are known to be frequently used to send out spam. Blacklists are a good and fast way to filter out a large amount of spam sent to our customers. The blacklist plays an important role in summarizing the millions of servers and computers which are poorly maintained and are abused for sending out spam all over the world.
AMES is using a combination of company owned-, open source- and commercially available blacklists. It is likely that when AMES blocks your IP address, nearly all other professional anti-spam solutions will do the same. A large amount of spam is blocked by blacklists.
How can I find out if I am blacklisted?
The easiest way is checking your IP address via MX Toolbox. They use all common blacklists.
How did I become blacklisted?
A blacklisted IP address is comparable with an infected machine by a virus or trojan.
Another reason for being blacklisted is that your mail server is used to send out newsletters or Email campaigns. When there are a large number of complaints about your newsletter or Email campaign, your mail server IP could get blacklisted. Most blacklists automatically remove their blacklisted IP address after 24 hours in case no other spam or complaints are received.
How do I remove my IP from a blacklist?
First of all you need to make sure that the IP address does not send out spam anymore: identify which system is sending out spam, and report this to the responsible party that can prevent this abuse.
When the issue causing the spam has been resolved, a request for delisting can be done to the maintainer of the public blacklist.
As soon as a delisting request is processed and your IP address has been removed from the blacklist, the AMES mail servers will be notified of this change within 15 minutes and you will once again be able to deliver mail to our platform.
A note on public IP addresses
If you are sending mail from an IP address known to be consumer IP space, such as ADSL or Cable internet connections, your IP address might be listed for that reason. Email should always be sent through ISP- or company mail servers.
