Avira issues a warning against Spam mails from fraudulent sites
Tue, 04 August 2009
At present fraudsters are sending out Spam mails inviting people to download Avira AntiVir antivirus software, however the site is a bogus one
Tettnang, 4 August 2009 – Operators of fraudulent sites are currently sending audacious Spam mails warning of a dangerous virus. In addition, they also recommend that users should protect themselves with antivirus software from Avira. However, if they click on the relevant download button, email recipients looking for protection will find themselves on a fraudulent site rather than on the Avira Website. Here the antivirus software, which is actually available free-of-charge, can only be downloaded after the user has agreed to a subscription with the Website operator for an annual fee of Euro 96.
Avira urgently advises against clicking on the links in the Spam mail. The subject lines of the mails contain messages such as “Virus warning - Your PC is unprotected” and the mail text itself reads as follows:
“Attention - Important Virus Warning:
According to a report from the German Office for Security in Information Technology (BSI), a particularly virulent virus/Trojan is in circulation.
Your PC is unprotected and therefore potentially at risk. In your own interests we advise you to download an up-to-date virus scanner.
You can get the latest version directly here:

Best wishes
Your Virus Warning Service”
One way fraudulent Websites can be recognized is by the fact that users have to register with their name, address, date of birth and email address before downloading the software. Avira and its official Download partners, such as Chip.de or PC Welt Online, do not require registration before downloading.
Interested users can download Avira AntiVir Personal from the www.free-av.com Website free-of-charge and without registering.
WebGuard, which is part of Avira’s AntiVir Premium and Premium Security Suite detects fraudulent sites and subscriptions with the blocking category “Fraud/ Deception”.
