Avira brings W32/Polipos to a stop
Wed, 26 April 2006
Tettnang, 26 April 2006 – Polymorphic viruses are real masters of disguise and particularly difficult to detect. W32/Polipos is a variant, which has heavily spread in the last few days. The virus mainly lurks in P2P information portals such as Gnutella and gets on the end user’s PC by downloading infected programs. If the virus W32/Polipos is started there, it will infect all running processes of Windows.
The tricky thing about a so-called polymorphic file infector such as W32/Polipos is that it infects executable files with its harmful code and changes anew with every infection. For this, the virus generates a new section within the Windows application and occupies it with a changed viral code. Since the harmful code permanently changes, it is difficult to detect all the infected programs with only one virus signature. Therefore, Avira has performed an engine update, which can be downloaded from www.avira.com
Avira also offers Antivir PersonalEdition Classic which is a free of charge antivirus solution for the end user.
