Avira Earns Top Certification in AV-Comparatives Malware Test

May Report Places Avira in Advanced+ Category, Ahead of 10 Other AV Products

Tettnang, Germany, June 1, 2011 – IT security expert Avira earned top honors with an Advanced+ rating by AV-Comparatives in its anti-virus comparative test, designed to detect new and unknown malicious software. In the testing, Avira’s AntiVir Premium security software achieved the highest certification level and beat out 10 other anti-virus products from a wide range of companies.

AV-Comparatives tests are released four times per year and are the security industry’s most comprehensive analysis of malware detections rates – which is one of the most important and reliable factors in determining the effectiveness of an anti-virus engine. The May anti-virus comparative evaluates software products against new and unknown malware to measure the proactive detection capabilities (e.g. through heuristics, generic signatures, etc.), and also tests the false positive rate.

Avira’s AntiVir Premium received highest marks for its ideal combination of proactive detection of malware and a low number of false alarms.

“Avira does very well in AV-Comparative tests each time they are released, and we credit that success to our engineers who work continuously to anticipate evolving computer security threats and develop ways to keep our customers safe,” said Travis Witteveen, COO Market & Operations at Avira. “Our more than 100 million users have told us they want maximum security protection, but with minimum drag on their computer performance. It’s our job to give customers the freedom to use their computers as they please, securely, whether the customer deploys our free software or our premium product.”
