Infected Firefox Add-on: Avira protects

On the servers of the Mozilla Foundation an infected Firefox Add-on was available for download which Avira antimalware solutions already detected

Tettnang, 09 February 2010 – The infected Add-on for the popular web browser Firefox which was available on the servers of the Mozilla Foundation has been detected as being malicious by Avira antimalware solutions for a longer time already.

During the past weekend news made the rounds that on the servers of the Mozilla Foundation infected Firefox Add-ons were found. The Add-on “Master Filer” was affected. The “Sothink Web Video Downloader” which was infected too according to the Mozilla Blog, is non malicious according to an analysis by Aviras Malware researchers.

Avira’s antimalware solutions already detected the program “file.exe” of the infected Add-on as TR/Dropper.gen; in this case it is a Trojan of the Bifrose family. The allegedly malicious “nsCatcher.dll” of the “Sothink Web Video Downloader” is confirmed to be clean though. Users of Avira solutions were already protected from the threat.

Avira offers basic protection with the free Avira AntiVir Personal. More protection is available with Avira AntiVir Premium. Its WebGuard filters malware even before it reaches the web browser. It is available for $36.99. Avira Premium Security Suite offers an even higher level of security. The package adds a firewall to the capabilities of Avira AntiVir Premium which helps against network attacks, a web filter to protect the children from unsuitable content, AntiSpam and back-up. It is available for $59.99.
