Avira AntiVir for Linux is convincing by its speed and excellent detection rate
Tettnang, 13 June 2008 – For the thirteenth time Avira receives the VB100 Award, the highest recognition for virus protection and safety. In the current comparison test, Avira AntiVir for Linux was put to the test. The decisive factor for the quality seal from Virus Bulletin was that the software detects all "In the Wild" viruses without any false positives using, for both On Demand and real-time scanning. The virus protection of the German IT security experts impressed the demanding testers once again with the excellent detection rate and the rapid malicious software (malware) scan.
Out of the current ten million known digital viruses about 1700 afflict Linux and Unix based computers. The explanation for this phenomenon is quite simple: Windows is by far the most used system and as a homogeneous environment rather vulnerable. Due to this, exploits, which use concerted exploitation of safety gaps, get a much larger circulation. For hackers it is worth the effort. Additionally under Linux/Unix, patches are available much quicker for potential loopholes – another aspect as to why Linux/Unix systems are less attractive for organized criminals.
However this does not mean that Linux networks do not need virus protection. Just the opposite, systems with alternative operating systems are used frequently as mail or file servers and present a great risk. Tjark Auerback, founder and managing director of Avira, says: "Without becoming self-infected, they transport malware further into other networks. In order to avoid a virus gaining access onto a target system, protection should be implemented directly at this point".
The majority of all Linux products tested by Virus Bulletin use Dazuko for real-time scanning. Dazuko is a kernel module developed by Avira that presents an interface between the file system and real-time virus scanners. It also enables other protection tools from third party providers to use these interfaces under Linux and FreeBSD. The free availability of the kernel module Dazuko currently enables other protection tool providers to offer their portfolio on Linux operating systems and derivatives making it possible for them to participate in the current test.
