22 September 2005 – H+BEDV Datentechnik urges to treat the issue of mobile computing with awareness. The provider of cross-system business security solutions from Tettnang furthermore misses the use of measures that effectively protect company networks against attacks with mobile end devices. Because of this reason, H+BEDV has developed AntiVir Mobile Security that protects PDAs and smart phones against malware.
This statement from the security specialist is supported by the results of a recent survey the Dynamic Markets has carried out by order of Landesk Software: 64 % think that there is a danger of malware in mobile devices, 20 % are concerned about the theft of mobile devices – data theft, spying or the uncontrolled flow of information are not really portrayed as controversial.
According to Tjark Auerbach, CEO of H+BEDV Datentechnik, mobile computing has the following advantages: “Mobile computing offers numerous possibilities, which can increase the employee’s productivity and efficiency, for example the integration of sales representatives or employees traveling on company business“. “But the persons in charge should be aware of the dangers that are associated with their usage. At present we cannot talk about a danger of mobile devices yet, but this may change in the next two years. Appropriate protective measures will then be indispensable. Because of this reason, the corresponding developments are vital.“
Exactly this point shows the deficits which are revealed in the survey: according to 58 % of the persons in charge of the IT in Germany think that the security situation is completely under control in the entire network with regard to the integration of mobile devices. At the same time, around 70 % of the interviewees said they did not know which and how many mobile devices are connected to the company network, 43 % said that the reliability in the employees is the best to keep the security situation under control. Both trainings and guidelines should make things clear – and half of them assume that those plans will be actually carried out.
"A comprehensive security concept requires the confidence in the employees as well as trainings and the setting up of guidelines“, says Mr. Auerbach. ”But there is more to it than that: the regular supervision of these demands is just as important as the application of the security software.“
This does also mean: an up-to-date virus protection software should not only protect PCs in companies; it shall also be installed on all mobile end devices such as PDAs and smart phones. Products such as AntiVir Mobile Security take care for security in this area. The product from H+BEDV is available for the operating system Windows CE and for Symbian. Apart from that, the registration of the devices on the company network shall be limited through the usage of passwords. We shall also keep in mind other devices such as laptops that enable mobile computing over WLAN. Hacking a WLAN-net can have very bad consequences: this includes to spy business critical company and customer data, to send spam or dangerous code and to create theft copies. Besides the virus protection software, also firewall and encryption should also cater for security.
