Avira presents virus protection solutions for public institutions in Berlin at the ‘Moderner Staat’ trade-fair from 4 - 5 November 2008 in hall 2, booth 410
Tettnang, 5 November 2008 – Emails, blogs, online chat and social networks – the use of digital communication within public administration and state institutions have grown so much that they are now mission critical. Email is the most widely used form communication that has propagated through in all spheres. Things that work for personal communication are not always useful for the communication between authorities and businesses or citizens. Neither companies or private users get any real advantage from all the virtual possibilities of the online world, especially concerning e-government. According to a survey performed by Booz Allen Hamilton, 33 percent of the Internet users reject online offers from authorities based on security concerns. The security experts at Avira took these results to pose the question of the month to 3,561 visitors to www.free-av.com: “Curse or technology blessing? The email has replaced the letter post, the old good fax has gone out of style and data is stored ‘virtually’. Be honest, do you think that one day all workplaces will depend on the Internet?”
38 per cent of the participants answer with a clear “Yes” as they attach great importance to the time-saving Internet research possibilities. One out of ten people think the conventional, interpersonal communication methods are much more important and they prefer for instance to meet face-to-face than having impersonal telephone or video conferences. 20 percent would prefer to have more flexibility at work. They think that in future it will be standard to work at home with a networked PC – as long as the modern technology is reliable. 18 percent predict far-reaching issues if there are technical difficulties. This opinion reflects the acceptance of the modern e-government offers to businesses: Results of a BITKOM study show that only every second German business has used e-government applications once a year in 2007. However, they said that e-government is not that attractive for businesses. The private users think far more positively about digital visits to the authorities: every sixth person thinks more processes should be performed online as the authorities still require too much paperwork.
“E-government can be improved considerably, the users have to be attracted to use online offers”, explains Rainer Witzgall, Executive Vice President at Avira. “Furthermore there has to be a more uniform standard in delivery.” Rainer Witzgall thinks that it is very important to focus the benefit of the user more strongly and communicate about the security implemented in order to tap the full E-government’s potential.
This year Avira will join the trade-fair “Moderner Staat” in Berlin from 4 to 5 November in hall 2, booth 410.
